Background of the Study
Network virtualization has emerged as a transformative technology in modern network management, allowing multiple virtual networks to coexist on a shared physical infrastructure. By decoupling network functions from hardware dependencies, network virtualization enhances flexibility, scalability, and security in campus networks. Universities, which manage large-scale and heterogeneous networks, can significantly benefit from network virtualization by improving resource allocation, simplifying administration, and reducing operational costs.
Federal University, Gusau, faces several challenges in managing its growing network infrastructure, including bandwidth congestion, inefficient resource utilization, and security vulnerabilities. Network virtualization presents an opportunity to address these challenges by enabling more dynamic and efficient network management. This study explores the impact of network virtualization on the university’s network, focusing on performance, security, and administrative efficiency.
Statement of the Problem
The traditional network architecture at Federal University, Gusau, is increasingly struggling to meet the demands of modern applications, remote learning, and research activities. The static nature of physical networks makes it difficult to adapt to changing requirements, leading to inefficiencies in bandwidth usage and security management. Without network virtualization, the university’s IT team faces challenges in implementing network segmentation, load balancing, and automated security policies.
Despite the potential benefits of network virtualization, its adoption in the university has been limited due to concerns about implementation complexity, performance overhead, and security risks. This study aims to analyze the impact of network virtualization on campus networks, identify potential challenges, and recommend best practices for its effective implementation.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the impact of network virtualization on performance and security in campus networks.
To identify challenges associated with implementing network virtualization at Federal University, Gusau.
To recommend strategies for optimizing network virtualization in the university’s IT infrastructure.
Research Questions
How does network virtualization affect the performance of campus networks?
What challenges arise during the implementation of network virtualization?
What strategies can be adopted to optimize network virtualization in the university?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on network virtualization at Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State. It does not cover private-sector implementations or non-virtualized networks. Limitations include constraints in obtaining detailed network performance metrics.
